Chile - Travelling Chile On A Budget
Chile is a relatively easy country for the foreign traveller to manoeuvre around. It has the strongest economy in Latin America and a very good public transport system. There are some current issues with the transport in the capital, Santiago de Chile, but nothing that will cause you, as a tourist a major problem.
In the tourist areas you will find that most people speak English. I have found the Chilean people to be very accommodating and friendly. I have to say, I feel safer walking around Santiago alone at night that I do in London. There are a few pick-pockets around so be sensible and keep your wallet in your front pocket, or hook your handbag over your head. You are in a South American country and this is just common sense!
You can hire a car for around 120 a week. Be sure to hire a vehicle from a reputable company like Hertz. I have come unstuck before as some vehicles aren't maintained up to our usual standards by some local companies.
The roads are really good and the country is easy to drive around. As you travel the motorways you will come across toll booths every few miles, but you will save the cost of these on the cheaper fuel prices. If you have the money to spend on car hire I wouldn't worry about driving here. If you are nervous about driving abroad I would recommend picking your car up from outside Santiago, so you will time to settle in before hitting a major city.
For long distance travel you can use the coach service. These are all air conditioned and of a high standard. It's very comfortable travelling for a good price. Locally the bus service is very good. Certainly better than it is in Britain!
You will find a hotel from anywhere upwards of 5 a night. Even in Vina del Mar I found a good double room for 20 a night. It all depends on the facilities you require. I don't see any need to book anywhere in advance.
Have a great time! There are some awesome natural sights to see here, and the country changes as you travel from north to south. The country is so diverse you will not see it all in one visit. Be open minded. If you travel looking for 5 star hotels and tourist resorts you will miss so much. Mix with the locals and go off the beaten track.
